about

An inspired and crucial sonic document that assembles the cream of Hurst’s soundtrack work from 2009-2017 most of which has been unreleased till now!! Hurst’s instinct for ecstatic rhythmic urgency willfully asserts itself throughout this collection providing a kind of hypnotic pulse that threads these pieces together into a densely layered lysergic dream-quilt of myth/sound.
Kicks off with “Ghost Line (excerpt)” from the film Ghost Line by filmmaker Shona Masarin and interdisciplinary artist Cori Olinghouse which debuted at Danspace @ St. Marks Church on the Bowery in NYC in 2014. The film has since been screened at a multitude of prestigious venues including Lincoln Center and EYE Institute, Amsterdam among others. Eerie, and darkly absurd in equal measures, Hurst’s ability to fluidly interweave his sonic trademarks throughout while still nurturing the film”s distinct rhythm and movement, developing it’s own cadence organically. Track 2, “L.S.D” was the sound element for Hurst’s Luminous Scintillation Distributors, a kinetic light object designed by Andrew Hurst and Shona Masarin originally commissioned for a performance at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY in 2014 and was included in the “The Owl Flies at Twilight” event at Knockdown Center in NYC which was part of the Whitney Museum’s Dreamlands exhibition program in 2017. This is without question Hurst’s most hypnotic piece to date. Tracks no.3,”Chatter” no.4,”Five” no.7,”Falling Spikes” no.9, “Fuse” no.10, “Decumulation Blues” and no.11, “Cruisin” were composed for the Julia Gleich Dances as part of “In the Use Of Others For The Change” performed at the Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn, NY. in which Hurst composed an album of original music and created a 2-channel video installation. Track no.5, “Tito” no.6, “Revival” and no. 12, “Ascension” hail from Hurst’s artist’s DVD, Motion Pix Vol. 1 whose companion exhibition was held at English Kills Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY in 2009. Finally, track no.8, “Slipstream” is a soundtrack from a dual projector Super 8 looping film piece by Shona Masarin.
