“Heir” is the 3rd disc from the self-released Hurstmusic 3 CD set distributed at the opening of Hurst’s MFA exhibition at Pratt Institute in 2001. This piece is comprised of a 30 minute long collage of mutilated piano, foaming radio feedback, field recordings of street preachers and loads of other textural oozings. Mostly recorded in the winter of 2000 in Brooklyn, NY in Canoneer Court on the Pratt campus, this is a pivotal work in the sense that it largely sidesteps conventional rock n’ roll idioms and instead explores more abstract soundscapes that Hurst would perpetually expand on in the coming years most notably on the devastating Nightwatch debut album from 2003 as well as his ongoing soundtrack projects. Terrifying, visceral, and eerily urgent; this is Hurstmusic in all it’s lustful and pungent glory.
