about

Junk Raga, Hurst’s 11th solo album is an essential SWMP/PSYK tapestry of beatscapes and oozing subterranean tape excursions that can drift or strangle, like smuggled freight from some foreign midnight. Side 1 contains two longer pieces; the searing trance-like “Hairdo In The Void” followed by the charred rhythmic blowout of Ask The Vibration People. Both pieces have mid-point tempo shifts that hijack the listener: swerving headlong into deeper textural chasms of unknown origin. Side 2 kicks off with the slow molten dream-tryst- Paint The Elevator With The Blood Of The Moon which slithers underfoot, hiding out in the florid and profane folds of your subconscious. Next up is Inala St. Incident, which found it’s inspiration from a visit to my lovely Masarin inlaws on Australia’s Gold Coast, with elusive dark shapes inhabiting the summer evening; sugar gliders and lizards abound. Last song is Jessica’s Got A Secret- a smoldering carjacked ride-along through the trembling thickets of what’s been referred to as “Psych/Drum-n-Goth.”
